Vodafone seem to have leapt onto the Android boat this year, if you go onto their site you will find in the Coming soon page a list of 4 new Android phones coming this year to the British carrier. Here are some shots of the phones to come:

Htc Desire

Htc Legend

Nexus One

Xperia X10

So from what we can see, there will be plenty of choice on Vodafone alone, let alone the other carriers such as Orange and T-mobile who we know will also carry the Desire. With the Desire looking like it will come out before the Nexus One, does that mean the Vodafone will make the Desire its flagship phone, like Verizon did with the Droid, or maybe the Nexus One will be the flagship, as no other English carriers have announced that they will offer that phone. Who knows, but it is only about 2 weeks until T-mobile is supposedly releasing the Desire, the tension is building.

There have been several rumors flying around recently about the Nexus One possible heading to India in a simplified cheaper version, thus allowing a great phone into the hands of the less financially fortunate . This would not be the first time that a company have sold a cheaper version of the phone by removing certain aspects and adding a “lite” to the title, such as the Galaxy Lite by Samsung.

Obviously being just a rumor we don’t know if this is true or not, or what would be scrapped in order to cut costs. The likelihood is that the screen will remain the same size of 3.7inches as will the resolution, however after that anything could be replaced for a cheaper alternative. If we were guessing (which we are) we would say that the camera will probably be replaced with a lower megapixel version, and the 1Ghz processor will most likely also be replaced.

But we don’t know how strong this rumor is, coming from Techtree. From our point of view it looks unlikely because if people who are less well off in third world countries want an Android Phone, it makes more sense to send a already cheap Android phone (such as the Tattoo) to the country instead. Only time will tell.

Frandroid recently posted that the Htc Tattoo will receive the Android 2.1 upgrade, obviously after customization by Htc for its Resistive touch screen and lower resolution. This was not a given until Htc confirmed this upgrade:

“Kindly note we understand that now that a phone running Android OS 2.1 is available that you are excited to get an update for your Tattoo. We are still working hard to building Sense for this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon. Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer”

This is not only great news for those who have Tattoos, but also for all lower end Android devices that were feared would not have the required umff to pull off Android 2.1. But if this with a 525 Mhz processor can, then there is high hope for devices like the Htc Dream/G1 and Magic.

This is what a spokesperson for Sony Ericsson said when questioned about the Xperia X10 shipping with Android 1.6. This quotation applies to the Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini Pro. So far the only information we have is that it will be released before the end of the year. That leads us to wonder what Android 2.2 contains, and if what he mentioned is true, that it is a variant of Eclair, then will it be out soon? Because we have already been given the name of the next version of Android – FroYo – which suggest that they are already working on it. Ohhh dear, how the world of Android updates is confusing, well to sooth your confuzzled mind, relax if only for a few minutes and watch this unboxing of the Xperia X10:

The motorola backflip was only announced very recently by At&t, and yet there are reported problems with it, due to a previously Open Project phone being made “Closed”. There were worries about Verizon doing this with their phones, however they did not. What some people are complaining about is that At&t are making this phone much less android-like. For instance, you can not remove the default At&t apps that come pre-installed on the phone, nor can you install non-market apps. Not only that but they removed Google search in replacement for Yahoo, on a Google Android device. This is just so un-android, and there will be a lot more complaints I imagine. At&t’s response was:
We like the Android as an operating system on its own, but we want to make sure that we have, and customers have the option, to put applications on that device that are not just Google applications. And we want to give customers the choice of other applications on that device, not just the same Google applications.
Overall this is just a bad idea and I can think of no good that will come to At&t

We are all expecting the Desire to be expensive due to its pure awesomeness, however from what Amazon have put as its price it seems like that may diminish its number of consumers. As you can see it states that its due to be released on the 1 April, that would be about right because T-Mobile announced that they will release it on the 26 March, being the first carrier in the world to have it. However a price that high will surely drive away customers, thats even more than Expansys which is selling it for £439. Now we don’t know what the RRP is but I expect that when the phone is released Amazon will drop its price to something similar to the Expansys reasonable price. Because if not, the phone may be approaching 4 figures when it reaches the States. However Amazon are also selling the Legend and Nexus One, the later selling for £600 which is pure extortion.

We will keep you updated on the latest news, so be sure to check back.

Update:

The price has now dropped on Amazon UK to £440, nearly a £100 drop. This is obviously good news and with the first tariffs released yesterday we are starting to get an idea of the price of this beauty. £440 is not a bad deal, but with Orange promising to deliver it for free I can see stiff competition between carriers.
